How to be Less Busy and More Effective

In our hectic modern world, we believe that rushing from one task to the next and managing multiple priorities shows everyone that we are productive.

Indeed, because of this cult of busyness, too many of us feel overwhelmed, overworked, and behind their “busy” schedule.

You, just as many other ambitious people, follow some productivity and time management tips for high-level performance and time optimization.

However, the result that you are doing more but achieving less.

What’s going wrong? What is the one million secret on how to be more effective than productive? Which powerful techniques can multiply your productive hours?

Let us have a look at some tips and hack from successful people on how to stretch your time, your effectiveness, and answer these questions in this post.

Quit complaining about how much you have to do

Usually, we complain because we feel powerless to get what we want — just excuses for not doing anything to help your situation. So what we have to do is analyze our complaints before talking about them.

When you complain, nobody wants to help you.
— Stephen Hawking

Folks are looking for people who can impact their lives positively, who can inspire them for more. If you complain about your problems most of the time, you have a negative outlook on your situation and life.

On the other hand, you can complain to yourself about feeling overwhelmed with the demands on your time.

There is no need for any study to be presented to understand that in general, we spend around 4–5 hours per day on our daily routine tasks like getting dressed, eating, gym, household chores, etc., along with the full-time job. No wonder we cannot get everything that we planned for a day.

And the #1 question is here: how can we manage our time better?

The secret is that you should ?

  • Work only on important tasks.
  • Don’t overload your schedule.
  • Take your daily routine into account.
  • During execution, don’t think about all your planned items. Just focus on your current task at hand.
  • Once that’s done, move on to the next one. Thinking about your whole day of work will drain your mental energy needlessly.

Be busy, but not stressed.

Eliminate unimportant activities from your life

Of course, it’s easier to say than to do.

Human nature craves the satisfaction of achievement. We are seeking for results but rarely progress. That’s why we often tend to engage in trivial activities first. For example, by taking a course and get a certificate for the accomplishment, learn new 100 Spanish words in a month, and so on.

It explains the pointless accomplishments of a random activity that does not lead towards our goal — our success.

The most productive people among us regularly ask themselves which tasks they can eliminate because they focus on results and know that success is not about the number of tasks you finish, but about their significance.

The advice here is, to begin with ?

  • Multiplying your time by going through everything you do in a day with eliminating mindset;
  • Cutting off unnecessary distractions like the TV, Netflix, or video games to return to the effective mode of operation;
  • Organizing and prioritizing first the tasks and needs that have to be done to fulfill urgent commitments and are important.

What is important is seldom urgent, and what is urgent is seldom important. — Dwight Eisenhower

With that being said, and with a little bit more effort by using the Eisenhower Matrix, prioritizing your tasks based on their urgency will be more comfortable.

Enhance productivity using the 80/20 rule

The 80/20 rule by Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto states that in any pursuit, 80% of the results will come from 20% of the efforts.

And highly productive people are ?

  1. Trying to identify the most important 20% of their work to maximize efficiency.
  2. Looking at ways to cut down the other 80% of their schedule.
  3. And finding more time for things that make the biggest impact.

More about the Pareto principle, you can read here. This method will help you focus. The next step is to take the right action to solve your issues.

Start working on getting the motivation to continue

Motivation comes after productivity and not before.

As soon as you planned and prioritized everything, do not try to look for motivation and inspiration right after. Instead, focus on getting started — whether you are motivated or not.

You don’t need to tackle everything at once.

The trouble of getting motivated, it’s often because we are looking at the massive scope of a task or problem at the first glance.

Just start doing something, and you will find it easier to keep going because taking action is what leads to motivation, which in turn leads to more action from your side.

The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones. — Confucius

Use your “lost” time
Last but not least, and more effectively, is to do your chores while you cannot work on essential tasks.
Listen to podcasts on your commute. Reply to Whatsapp messages while waiting in line. Read a book while on a plane. Call your doctor for an appointment while waiting for a meeting to start, etc.
There are endless examples of how you can use “lost” time to get required (but not vital) stuff done.

Conclusion
Gain control of your daily schedule by carefully evaluating your daily activities and determine what can be eliminated, what can be delegated, and what should become a current or future priority.
Know when to take action and when to be patient, focus on your current priority without distractions.
Because productivity will increase with your efficiency and proper time management. You must have heard the phrase:
Winners don’t do different things. They do things differently. — Shiv Khera
I hope this post will be useful for you and your success journey.

The WordPress RollerCoaster

Growing and Giving Back
The WordPress Community taught me so much. Keep making efforts in good faith and results will follow.
It takes time to build trust.
Everyone has the potential to grow.
You can’t ignore diversity so might as well embrace it.
Sometimes the process of gaining such new insights was painful, but I still feel I’m lucky to have been given challenges that made me grow.

To give back, I want to continue helping communities outside of the English speaking world. I believe that’s the most powerful thing I can do to remove the barriers on the web and the vast world that it touches.

Timothy has been a freelance graphic designer since about 2014. He started by doing gigs from his room while still at University and from home. Earnings from his freelance jobs increased his interest in entrepreneurship and he started to consider starting his own creative agency.

How Timothy was introduced to WordPress
Timothy first came into contact with WordPress in 2016 when we were to use it to implement our final year projects website speechanalyser.com. Before that, all he knew was basic, outdated HTML from high school and some knowledge of Adobe Dreamweaver.

With WordPress, the process of customizing blog design through edits to PHP files was straightforward and enjoyable, so I got addicted to working with WordPress right away. I almost had no experience beyond HTML and CSS before then, but I was surprised that I was able to create a dynamic site myself.

We decided to use WordPress, and Our new blog looked like it came from the future. We used a theme from the repo and got such positive feedback from the blog we decided to open a content and media publishing agency (Ronzag Web Services).

While we got a few web redesign and design jobs thanks to the exposure the blog brought, we lacked the administrative and business skills needed and ended up going our separate ways. Then in his first real job after college , Timothy finally took it upon himself to learn the ins and outs of WordPress. He learnt how to install WordPress on a server and did some research on customizing themes.

This Forced me to look for my long time old friend and work together again, also we started a move to teach the world how to Install WordPress

With that knowledge alone I got my first web design clients and started earning nearly as much as he did at my job. I soon realized that “only” free WordPress themes would not take me so far, especially with my limited code skills. Therefore, like many WordPress designers in developing countries, I turned to using pirated themes instead.

I knew that it was both unsafe and unethical, and decided to learn how to code. Knowing how to build themes from scratch would surely help me rise above the competition.

The WordPress community from Timothy’s perspective
Timothy has a lot of interaction with the WordPress community. Also I search for solutions from blogs about WordPress and always talk to or ask people from the community for a solution.

I believe that this interaction is the result of a glass ceiling — the WordPress community is partially online and partially in-person, but there is a local group in Uganda. And because Uganda, like many other developing nations, lacks a way to pay online many can’t access premium support, online learning, or most other types of professional development. No matter how welcoming the people of WordPress might be, it can still feel like it mostly belongs to those with enough privilege to conduct business on the internet.

WordPress & inclusion
As most freelancers know, it’s really hard to learn while you also still need to earn. Add pitching to clients and shipping graphic design projects… there are only so many hours in a day.

I have a programming background and have always been more of a creative person. In order to grow as a web designer/developer, I needed to learn PHP. Again, without access to a credit card, that was complicated. Also, free coding training wasn’t as widely available as it is now.

I wish that more developers would consider alternative ways for users who cannot pay for courses, themes, or plugins (whether that’s because of available infrastructure or otherwise) Just Like one of the Community Members (GoTechUg) is Doing providing free content Online. He wishes that WordPress tutors and developers would open up ways to accommodate aspiring learners in developing countries who cannot access plugins, courses, and themes, to be able to give back and to participate at another level.

WordPress has allowed me to build an income I would have no other way of earning and it makes a huge difference. I believe sharing stories like mine will hopefully make WordPress products and services become more universally available. In addition, I hopes that more aspiring, self-taught developers will find courage in reaching out to connect with others out there.

Translating WordPress
I kept translating Codex, themes, plugins It was the first time for me to experience being part of an open source community and working together with people I’ve never met in person (and without being paid!).

4 Steps to Deal With Anxiety During COVID-19

If you’re feeling anxious, sad, lonely, scattered, or worried – I want you to know that it’s normal. In fact, it’s most likely a sign of good mental well-being!

Fears about COVID-19 can take an emotional toll, especially if you’re already living with an anxiety disorder. But you’re not powerless. These tips can help you get through this stressful time.

1. Stay informed—but don’t obsessively check the news.

It’s vital to stay informed, particularly about what’s happening in your community, so you can follow advised safety precautions and do your part to slow the spread of coronavirus. But there’s a lot of misinformation going around, as well as sensationalistic coverage that only feeds into fear. It’s important to be discerning about what you read and watch.

  • Stick to trustworthy sources such as the CDC, the World Health Organization, and your local public health authorities.
  • Limit how often you check for updates. Constant monitoring of news and social media feeds can quickly turn compulsive and counterproductive—fueling anxiety rather than easing it. The limit is different for everyone, so pay attention to how you’re feeling and adjust accordingly.
  • Step away from media if you start feeling overwhelmed. If anxiety is an ongoing issue, consider limiting your media consumption to a specific time frame and time of day (e.g. thirty minutes each evening at 6 pm).
  • Ask someone reliable to share important updates. If you’d feel better avoiding media entirely, ask someone you trust to pass along any major updates you need to know about.
  • Be careful what you share. Do your best to verify information before passing it on. Snopes’ Coronavirus Collection is one place to start. We all need to do our part to avoid spreading rumors and creating unnecessary panic.

2. Focus on the things you can control.

There are so many things outside of our control, including how long the pandemic will last, how other people behave, and what’s going to happen in our communities. That’s a tough thing to accept, and so many of us respond by endlessly searching the Internet for answers and thinking over all the different scenarios that might happen. But as long as we’re focusing on questions with unknowable answers and circumstances outside of our personal control, this strategy will get us nowhere—aside from feeling drained, anxious, and overwhelmed.

When you feel yourself getting caught up in fear of what might happen, try to shift your focus to things you can control. For example, you can’t control how severe the coronavirus outbreak is in your city or town, but you can take steps to reduce your own personal risk (and the risk you’ll unknowingly spread it to others), such as:

  • Washing your hands frequently (for at least 20 seconds) with soap and water or a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
  • Avoiding touching your face (particularly your eyes, nose, and mouth).
  • Staying home as much as possible, even if you don’t feel sick.
  • Avoiding crowds and gatherings of people.
  • Avoiding all non-essential shopping and travel.
  • keeping 6 feet of distance between yourself and others when out.
  • Getting plenty of sleep, which helps support your immune system.
  • Following all recommendations from health authorities.

3. Plan for what you can.

It’s natural to be concerned about what may happen if your workplace closes, your children have to stay home from school, you or someone you love gets sick, or you have to self-quarantine. While these possibilities can be scary to think about, being proactive can help relieve at least some of the anxiety.

  • Write down specific worries you have about how coronavirus may disrupt your life. If you start feeling overwhelmed, take a break.
  • Make a list of all the possible solutions you can think of. Try not to get too hung up on “perfect” options. Include whatever comes to mind that could help you get by.
  • Focus on concrete things you can problem solve or change, rather than circumstances beyond your control.
  • After you’ve evaluated your options, draw up a plan of action. When you’re done, set it aside and resist the urge to go back to it until you need it or your circumstances significantly change.

4. Stay connected—even when physically isolated I liken that to getting a root canal and then punching yourself in the face. I consider that unnecessary, self-inflicted pain.

Evidence shows that many people with coronavirus—particularly young, seemingly healthy people—don’t have symptoms but can still spread the virus. That’s why the biggest thing that most people can do right now to make a positive difference is to practice social distancing.

But social distancing comes with its own risks. Humans are social animals. We’re hardwired for connection. Isolation and loneliness can exacerbate anxiety and depression, and even impact our physical health. That’s why it’s important to stay connected as best we can and reach out for support when we need it, even as we cut back on in-person socializing.

  • Make it a priority to stay in touch with friends and family. If you tend to withdraw when depressed or anxious, think about scheduling regular phone, chat, or Skype dates to counteract that tendency.
  • While in-person visits are limited, substitute video chatting if you’re able. Face-to-face contact is like a “vitamin” for your mental health, reducing your risk of depression and helping ease stress and anxiety.
  • Social media can be a powerful tool—not only for connecting with friends, family, and acquaintances—but for feeling connected in a greater sense to our communities, country, and the world. It reminds us we’re not alone.
  • That said, be mindful of how social media is making you feel. Don’t hesitate to mute keywords or people who are exacerbating your anxiety. And log off if it’s making you feel worse.
  • Don’t let coronavirus dominate every conversation. It’s important to take breaks from stressful thoughts about the pandemic to simply enjoy each other’s company—to laugh, share stories, and focus on other things going on in our lives.

HOW TO SURVIVE, THRIVE AND STAY SANE WHILE WORKING FROM HOME

Feeling frazzled working from home? I’ve got to be honest. It’s been a rough week. How’s yours going?

Quarantine means more people are working from home. If that’s new to you, just follow these tips and you should do OK, heck you may even find that you like it.

I’ve found myself feeling frustrated and frazzled between phone calls, running ads stressing on why we need to do the five things, picking up tissues off the floor, and feeling guilty about how many episodes of Dragons Rescue Riders my daughter was watching.

You’re probably getting a ton of tips and advice on how to deal with the COVID-19. But processing all that information can be overwhelming.

There’s only one thing I recommend you remember as you’re adjusting to this experience: have some self-compassion.

When you’re on the brink of beating yourself up for not having it all together, just remind yourself: “This is new. I’m learning how to do this. It will take me time but I am making progress each day on how to find more balance and peace in work and life.”Broadband: You need the internet to work successfully from home.

The faster your connection, the better. If you live alone — or at least if you’re home alone during your normal working hours — and if your work is mostly text-based, a connection of just 5Mbps should be enough.

But if it’s the coronavirus that’s keeping you at home and you have a partner who’s also working online and kids with little else to do than stream Netflix or Disney+, you’ll need more, at least a 25Mbps connection.

Videoconferencing

You’ll also need fast broadband if you’re going to be attending videoconferencing meetings with your co-workers.

You should also, of course, install the app for whichever videoconferencing service your company has standardized on.

It doesn’t have one? Almost all the videoconferencing services are offering free packages so you can give them a try.

Personally, I like Zoom, even with its privacy concerns. If you’ve never done videoconferencing before, check out this guide to videoconferencing so you can make the most of it and avoid foolish mistakes.

Instant messaging/real-time group chat

If your office has standardized around Slack or Microsoft Teams, clearly you’ll need one or the other at home. My preference is good old Internet Relay Chat (IRC) or the more modern Google Hangouts Chat. If you want to run your own open-source, cloud-based service, check out Mattermost.

Remote desktop

Do you need access to your office desktop because your laptop doesn’t cut it? It’s always best to have a business laptop that you can use in a pinch as a do-anything, ready-to-run work desktop. But if you don’t, check out such remote desktop programs as TeamViewer, SplashTop or Microsoft Remote Desktop (MRD). But forget about Apple Remote Desktop. It just doesn’t work well.

Windows

Don’t patch your Windows 10 computer unless you must. Windows 10’s patches are infamous for going wrong. It’s bad enough that your office IT staff has to cope with them. You really don’t want to try to troubleshoot them at home on your own. See “How to handle Windows 10 updates” for instructions on delaying non-critical updates.

Time management

Need to track your time? Check out Timely. It enables you to both schedule work jobs and track the time you actually spend on them. That said, the only way I can track what’s due when is with Google Calendar. The business calendar version is part of G Suite.

Project management

There are a lot of project management programs out there, but it’s hard to beat Basecamp. It’s full-featured and remarkably affordable: $99 a month, with unlimited users with no user fees or project limits.

For workflow management, you should check out Asana. But, fair warning, it’s so flexible that if you don’t set it up right from the get-go, you can end up with a messy spaghetti diagram. That’s not a tasty dish.

That’s the tech side. Here are some suggestions on how to keep your sanity based on my decades of doing this.

  • Get out and walk

Staying on your prat all day long isn’t good for your health, physical or mental. I walk for half an hour twice a day.

  • Keep regular business hours.

There are two really common time problems with working from home. The first runs like this: “I’m at home, so I can watch TV, I can play World of Warcraft, I can … whoa, what time is it?” The other runs like this: “I’m at work, and I must work all the time. I must not slack off. I must … whoa, what time is it? “ If you work 9 to 5 at the office, try to work 9 to 5 at home.

  • Stick to your diet.

You’ve heard of the freshman 15? That’s the weight everyone is said to gain when they first go to college. There’s also the work-at-home 15. Snacks are so accessible, and no one is watching! Also, we all tend to eat more when we’re under stress, and boy, are we ever stressed out these days. Try to eat healthy when you snack.

Instead of chips, try an apple. Instead of a soda, drink unsweetened tea, or even good old, hydrating water. Your scale (and your work clothes, which you’ll have to get back into eventually) will thank you.

  • Dress for work

You’ll be tempted to wear your jammies to work or your most comfortable T-shirt and shorts. Don’t give in to this unless you habitually work in comfy clothes anyway. If you’ve always worked in business attire, sweatpants and flip-flops aren’t going to feel like work to you, so keep wearing your business clothes to get into the right frame of mind.

  • Set up a dedicated area for work

It can be as little as a cordoned-off section of your kitchen table. But scattering work across your home leads to scattered thought.

  • Make it clear to your family

and roommates that when you’re at work, you’re at work, even when you’re at home. You’re not available — but you’re not inaccessibly locked down either. Set your limits, but still pay attention to the others at home. After all, you talk to other people at the office, right?

  • Get a comfortable chair

Unless you use a standing desk, you’re going to be spending a lot of time in that chair. It’s worth spending some real money on a good one.

  • Get a pet.

I’m not kidding. Especially if you live alone, having a furry companion will make your life a lot more fun. Just make sure your new office space is pet-proof.

  • Use your new home

videoconferencing gear and IM software to talk to friends and family. I’m an introvert’s introvert, but I still talk to my people on a regular basis. They help keep me together, and your folks will do the same for you — and vice versa.

  • Don’t obsess

over the news or check Twitter or the like every five minutes. Strive not to give in to temptation. It won’t help any, and you’ll just make yourself more upset. You may never love working at home.

It’s great for me, but it’s NOT, in big capital letters, for everyone. Still, if you follow my advice, you’ll get good work done and come out on the other side with your wits still about you.

Good luck, my friends.

digital literacy

THE STATE OF DIGITAL LITERACY IN UGANDA.

What is Digital Literacy?

Although the meaning of digital literacy can vary greatly by source, digital literacy encompasses 21st Century skills related to the effective and appropriate use of technology.

To keep things simple, let’s narrow the field to one definition. The American Library Association (ALA) defines digital literacy as “the ability to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create and communicate information, requiring both cognitive and technical skills.

Looking at Uganda with this digital literacy definition as a guiding light, its important to understand that even digital natives who know how to send a text and post to social media are not considered “digitally literate” by any means.

Why does it matter to a country like Uganda?

With various calls from different people and organizations and the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance encouraging the youth to take advantage of Information and communication technologies aiming at leveraging the power of ICT and Technology to build solutions small and big that can support and improve lives of people.

It can easily be seen how women are much encouraged to join the local tech communities with such programs like Andela Women in Tech, PyLadies so as to promote inclusiveness as there is a need to bridge the digital divide irrespective of gender.

There is a growing recognition especially in cities Kampala, Entebbe, Mukono, Jinja, Mbale, Mbarara, Fort Portal to mention but a few of the importance of digital literacy for students, workers and different individuals in various sectors in an increasingly digital economy.

Focusing on digital literacy as it pertains to the changing nature of work, drawing upon Uganda and research within and the best practices in order to define digital literacy, the skills it comprises and its importance. I have pulled insights mainly from educational and pedagogical research and work on technology.

My Tips for developing Digital Literacy.

  • Encourage Individuals to study and learn effectively in technology-rich environments, formal and informal.
  • Organizations should avoid digital literacies being “yet another thing” for staff, it is useful if they can be linked with other initiatives and woven in to existing processes.
  • Get people talking, encourage discussions about supporting individuals with digital skills and practices and the associated impact on staff roles which will help to widen awareness of digital literacies across the country.

In Conclusion.

I am certain that with increase in expertise in ICT, the youth will have the tools they need to distinguish themselves in the competitive global economy

When, while the lovely valley teems with vapour around me, and the meridian sun strikes the upper surface of the impenetrable foliage of my trees, and but a few stray gleams steal into the inner sanctuary, I throw myself down among the tall grass by the trickling stream; and, as I lie close to the earth, a thousand unknown plants are noticed by me: when I hear the buzz of the little world among the stalks, and grow familiar with the countless indescribable forms of the insects and flies, then I feel the presence of the Almighty, who formed us in his own image, and the breath of that universal love which bears and sustains us, as it floats around us in an eternity of bliss; and then, my friend, when darkness overspreads my eyes, and heaven and earth seem to dwell in my soul and absorb its power, like the form of a beloved mistress, then I often think with longing, Oh, would I could describe these conceptions, could impress upon paper all that is living so full and warm within me, that it might be the mirror of my soul, as my soul is the mirror of the infinite God!

O my friend — but it is too much for my strength — I sink under the weight of the splendour of these visions! A wonderful serenity has taken possession of my entire soul, like these sweet mornings of spring which I enjoy with my whole heart. I am alone, and feel the charm of existence in this spot, which was created for the bliss of souls like mine.

I am so happy, my dear friend, so absorbed in the exquisite sense of mere tranquil existence, that I neglect my talents. I should be incapable of drawing a single stroke at the present moment; and yet I feel that I never was a greater artist than now.

I am so happy, my dear friend, so absorbed in the exquisite sense of mere tranquil existence, that I neglect my talents. I should be incapable of drawing a single stroke at the present moment; and yet I feel that I never was a greater artist than now.

When, while the lovely valley teems with vapour around me, and the meridian sun strikes the upper surface of the impenetrable foliage of my trees, and but a few stray gleams steal into the inner sanctuary, I throw myself down among the tall grass by the trickling stream; and, as I lie close to the earth, a thousand unknown plants are noticed by me: when I hear the buzz of the little world among the stalks, and grow familiar with the countless indescribable forms of the insects and flies, then I feel the presence of the Almighty, who formed us in his own image, and the breath of that universal love which bears and sustains us, as it floats around us in an eternity of bliss; and then, my friend, when darkness overspreads my eyes, and heaven and earth seem to dwell in my soul and absorb its power, like the form of a beloved mistress, then I often think with longing, Oh, would I could describe these conceptions, could impress upon paper all that is living so full and warm within me.
